HELLO DIY TALLOW LOTION BARS
Let me introduce one of my favorite things to eat and put on my skin. I have a video about rendering grass-fed creamy white tallow and I show many ways I use tallow. There are so many wonderful things to tell you about tallow such as how it is the absolute best oil for your skin, and the most similar and compatible to our skin cells.
HERE ARE A FEW REASONS TO USE BEEF TALLOW ON YOUR SKIN:
- TALLOW REPAIRS SKIN AND HAS ANTI-AGING PROPERTIES
- WILL NOT CLOG YOUR PORES – NONCOMEDOGENIC
- LONG LASTING, A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY
- OUR ANCESTORS USED TALLOW FOR SKIN CARE
- SOFTENS SKIN QUICKLY DUE TO RAPID ABSORPTION AND VERY SOOTHING TO SKIN
- IF YOU RENDER THE TALLOW YOU CONTROL THE INGREDIENTS
Our family follows a Weston A. Price traditional diet based on ancestral wisdom, so we have plenty of healthy fats in our diet. Remember your skin can reflect your gut health so if you have skin issues I urge you to read Sally Fallon’s book Nourishing Traditions. This book will change your health.
PLEASE READ THIS FOR SOME SCIENTIFIC DETAILS ABOUT USING TALLOW ON YOUR SKIN.
DOES THIS DIY TALLOW LOTION BAR RECIPE HAVE RAW BEESWAX
Yes, from locally sourced beeswax or our own. Beeswax acts as a protective layer on your skin therefore a perfect match with tallow.
IS THIS RECIPE OILY AND SLOW TO ABSORB
No, beef tallow is quickly absorbed into our skin and leaves no oily trace which is great for not leaving oily spots on clothing or bedding.
WHICH OIL SHOULD I USE IN LOTION BARS
I recommend organic olive oil if you are making tallow lotion bars for your hands or body. Just do your best to source olive oil from a reputable company. I only use olive oil that I would eat. Your skin absorbs substances directly into your bloodstream so this is important.
Here is a great article explaining all the great benefits of rose hip seed oil for another option.
Jojoba oil is another oil I like to add to tallow lotion bars.
And of course I always love CASTOR OIL because it has so many benefits. You can read all about them here.
I usually will use a mixture of oils in my lotion bar recipe.
WHERE CAN I BUY BEEF TALLOW
Of course I think it is best to render your own beef tallow so you control the outcome.
If you need a tutorial about how to render beef tallow we have a video.
Here are some options to help you source beef tallow.
- If you order a half or whole beef from a rancher directly then you can specify to save the tallow when you fill out your cut sheet. We also have a blog post and Youtube video series about how to fill out a beef cut sheet.
- At farmer’s market you can easily find someone who sells grass fed beef and has access to beef tallow. Ask them if they will sell tallow.
- Some butcher shops will offer tallow for sale but you usually have to ask.
- These days there are online sources for grass fed tallow so the first place I recommend to look is the American Grassfed Association.

TIPS FOR MAKING DIY TALLOW LOTION BARS
- Making beauty projects can require a learning curve to find the perfect formula for your unique preference. With this being said I really don’t like to waste anything, not even a tablespoon of oil. I think it is best to make small amounts to make sure you love the recipe. If everything is perfect then multiply out the recipe to make the desired amount. I do this with all my recipes for beauty products.
- The mold you choose will determine the amount needed for each shape. Filling the shape with a tablespoon(s) of water first will help you know how many recipes to make. For example, I know each heart shape holds 1 tablespoon so I multiply out the ingredients to make the number of heart lotion bars I desire.
- One great reason to use small glass canning jars to make beauty products is because if you have some left you can put on a canning lid and store it until you need to replenish your supply. I do this all the time with lipstick. I make a desired color of lipstick and keep it stored in a canning jar. When my lipstick container needs to be refilled then I melt the lipstick in the canning jar then pour it into my lipstick container. Sometimes it will take several years for me to use up all of the lipstick in the canning jar.
- Using a canning jar lifter to lift your hot jar out of the water bath works great!

Gently melt the ingredients and pour into the silicone mold
STEP 4
