MAKING OLD-FASHIONED SALT DOUGH ORNAMENTS WITH YOUR FAMILY IS A GREAT WAY TO ESTABLISH TRADITIONS. THIS IS A FUN PROJECT TO MAKE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS, FAMILY KEEPSAKES, OR DECORATIONS. TO DECORATE THE ORNAMENTS, WE ARE GOING TO PAINT THEM WITH WATERCOLORS.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 CUPS FLOUR
- 3/4 CUP WATER
- 1/2 CUP SALT
EQUIPMENT
- BOWL
- SPOON
- COOKIE SHEET
- FOIL
- ROLLING PIN
- COOKIE CUTTERS
- STRAW
- WATERCOLORS TO PAINT ORNAMENTS
HOW TO MAKE OLD-FASHIONED SALT DOUGH ORNAMENTS
STEP 1
MAKE THE DOUGH BY MIXING 2 CUPS FLOUR, 3/4 CUP WATER, AND 1/2 CUP SALT. MIX UNTIL A SMOOTH DOUGH FORMS. (SIMILAR TO PLAY DOH)
STEP 2
ROLL OUT DOUGH AND PLACE ON FOIL LINED COOKIE SHEET.
STEP 3:
CUT OUT SHAPES WITH COOKIE CUTTERS AND REMOVE DOUGH FROM BETWEEN SHAPES. PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO TO SEE THIS. YOU CAN PUT YOUR CHILD’S HANDPRINT OR FOOTPRINT IN THE DOUGH FOR A KEEPSAKE.
STEP 4
USE A STRAW AND CUT OUT A HOLE CLOSE TO THE TOP OF EACH ORNAMENT SO YOU CAN HANG IT WITH TWINE OR RIBBON.
STEP 5
BAKE ORNAMENTS IN A 200 DEGREE OVEN FOR 3-4 HOURS OR UNTIL DRY.
STEP 6
DECORATE ORNAMENTS
STEP 7
TO DRY ORNAMENTS PLACE IN A 200 DEGREE OVEN OR 15-20 MINUTES. TIPS
- WATCH FOR THE SURFACE TO DRY ON THE ORNAMENTS THEN FLIP THEM OVER TO ALLOW THE OTHER SIDE TO DRY, THIS ALSO HELPS KEEP THEM FLAT.
- YOU CAN AIR-DRY THE ORNAMENTS OVERNIGHT OR UNTIL DRY.
- WHEN YOU MIX THE DOUGH IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO LET IT REST FOR 10 MINUTES BEFORE ROLLING.
- THIS RECIPE IS EASILY DOUBLED OR TRIPLED.

YOU CAN SPRAY THEM WITH POLYURETHANE OR COAT THEM WITH MOD PODGE.
HANG THE ORNAMENTS USING TWINE OR RIBBON.
